You Can Judge a Book By It’s Cover

While reading the New York Times this morning I came across an article written by Penelope Green in the Sunday Styles section.  As a designer it hit home with me as I am on a constant quest for beautiful books to fill clients custom libraries and bookshelves.  We spend so much time creating these beautiful spaces with endless shelving finished in high gloss paint, wallpapered backs, french oak, brass or nickle and we are then left to fill the spaces to create a cozy, well read library.

Many clients have their own books which end up looking sloppy or sad in the newly finished shelving.  We hunt down books by the yard to fill their shelves and the end result is beautiful.  The Strand book store in Union Square NYC has a fabulous selection but hearing about Juniper Books is a godsend.  Thatcher Wine will wrap your books or you can select from a vast collection of his.

A few of my favorite’s below:

Above: Custom Blues

Above: Kids Collection

Above: Da Vinci

Above: Fabric wrapped books in linen- how perfect would these be in a beach house?

Alexa Hampton, daughter of famed designer Mark Hampton, gives you a very personal insight into her aesthetic and how it has been used to satisfy her clients wishes in her new book, The Language of Interior Design. Alexa provides a tour of stunning residences from her own portfolio.  Eighteen classic spaces illustrate in rich detail the elements that govern cultivated design—contrast, proportion, color, and balance. Among the residences are a landmark 1912 McKim, Mead & White restoration on Fifth Avenue in New York City; an eclectic house by the sea layered in textures, patterns, and colors; a contemporary apartment distinguished by simple geometry and clean lines; and Hampton’s own apartment, filled with an exquisite collection of architectural elements.

Coming out october 19th:

As the best-selling author of 16 decoration and lifestyle books, the host of her own – and one of the first – television shows on HGTV for eight seasons, the creator of home fashion products that have generated close to two billion dollars in sales, and the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of her multi-million dollar empire, Chris Madden is an iconic name in the world of design. Widely known as the powerhouse who made “personal space” and “haven” household words through her ground-breaking books and products, Chris will now, for the first time, accompany her readers in THE SOUL OF A HOUSE through her own unique homes, showcasing her signature personal style that resonates throughout each room and share the basic steps and thought-processes that can easily turn any space, large or small, into a comfortable and stylish residence. Each room—from the entry foyer, master bedroom and living room to the mud room and greenhouse — will be explored with rich photography by Nancy Hill along with Chris’ styling tips as she chronicles the transformation of both her husband’s and her 100-year-old carriage house on three rambling acres outside of New York City and their mid-century modern getaway tucked in a bucolic apple orchard between the Green and Taconic Mountain ranges in Vermont.

Also included will be a sampling of those historic spaces that have served as an inspiration to Chris— from the early works of the legendary Billy Baldwin, Elsie de Wolfe, Nancy Lancaster, John Fowler and Thomas Jefferson – through lessons gleaned in the great rooms of designer showcase houses (including those of Mario Buatta, Mark Hampton, and Albert Hadley) and her travels to such architectural treasures as the summer dacha of Czar Nicholas II in Russia, Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment and Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Washington home and museum, Hillcrest, to her hands-on design work at the homes and offices of Oprah Winfrey, Katie Couric and Toni Morrison.

Owner of Hollyhock, Los Angeles’s renowned antiques and decorative arts mecca, Suzanne Rheinstein is known for her relaxed, elegant style. Style maker and interior designer Suzanne Rheinstein has a keen appreciation for special luxuries. She is a master at taking an eclectic mix of furnishings from the past and arranging them in a fresh, inspiring way. Elegant simplicity and attention to detail are the hallmarks of her look. A timeless quality pervades every room she designs. Rheinstein feels that how you live your life every day is much more important than getting your house together for a special occasion. Beautifully photographed, this inspiring volume shows examples of her work, ranging from a brick farmhouse in the Virginia countryside and a sophisticated rustic getaway overlooking the Big Wood River in Sun Valley to a year-round shingled residence on the beach in Newport Bay, as well as her own homes—a gracious Georgian Revival in Los Angeles and a New York City prewar pied-à-terre. They exemplify her talent for creating attractive homes that make living and entertaining extremely pleasurable.

Books: Rooms To Inspire in the City by Annie Kelly

The cover of this book is perfection- the striped blue and white dhurrie, embroidered ikat on the ottoman, blue and white lamp, glass chandelier, and all those books. This is an apartment I would find truly comfortable and is very similar to my old apartment- lots of blue and red with relaxed furniture where friends can drink a glass ( or 3) of wine and put their feet up. I have just purchased this from Amazon and am eagerly awaiting it’s arrival.

Great Fashion Designers Homes

It’s Fashion Week her in NYC we have seen some amazing pieces for Fall 2010. In the midst of the fashion madness I have found myself turning to some of the great designers homes as well as the runways for inspiration. Below are a few of my favorites.

Carolina Herrera: Just as classic and chic as her designs on the runway. Lots of stripes and yummy velvet.

I had to throw in these images of Carolina Herrera Jr’s home– both mother and daughter love red, stripes, and bold classic statement pieces. I love all the suzani! This is one of my favorite apartments of all time.

YSL: A legend who surrounded himself with exquisite objects. His home is a jewel box. You want to pick up and examine everything. He had an exceptional collection of paintings and art including works by: Picasso, Mondrian, Matisse, Goya, Ingres; and furniture from the Renaissance period to Art Deco period.

There is barely any room on the cocktail table…this man was a collector.

I love the above library

Marc Jacobs: Below are images of his three-story garden apartment on the Champ de Mars. Beautiful traditional moldings and paneling coupled with modern furniture makes for a fabulous apartment!

Lanvin: “Lanvin Blue” a cornflower shade of blue was the designers favorite color. The below rooms have been recreated in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

The bathroom below is very glamorous- I love the floor and the pedestal sink.

Coco Chanel: Her home was above her boutique in Paris. Her home is used for photo shoots and press interviews. She had many black lacquered chinoiserie screens. Her home is quite opulent with glistening chandeliers and gleaming mirrors and lacquer but still feels intimate and comfortable. Coco Chanel did not have a bedroom her…she slept across the street at The Ritz- of course!

The tan suede sofa was one of Coco’s favorites and would sit on it while interviewing. The color and fabric were some of her favorites.

Valentino’s Capri Home 1971: I love all of this blue and white. Crisp and cool with beautiful patterns.

Oscar De La Renta’s home in Kent, CT: Gardens are perfection and I love the living room. The reds, greens, and creams keep the grand scale feeling intimate.

Oscar De La Renta: table setting 1971: this is so much fun- one of my favorites.

Christian Louboutin: Would you expect the man who makes the most fabulous shoes to live in a lack-luster home? The vibrant orange walls with the classic molding and vibrant rug- Love it!

Aside from my collection of magazines ( every issue of House Beautiful, Elle Decore, House and Garden, Domino, World of Interiors, and Veranda), fiction and non-fictions books, and clients folders, I have a huge collection of books that I reach for when I need inspiration. The topics range from textiles, to architectural styles, to fashion, to artists, to table settings, to hotels, to interiors, etc. You never know what might move you. Each client requires a fresh eye and a different style.

For the sporty man: Drive an hour and a half outside of NYC and take aim at clays at Sandanona Shooting Grounds in Millbrook, NY. Once a tweedy private shooting club (the oldest in the country), Sandanona was purchased by Orvis, the outdoor sports clothier, and opened to the masses. Sip coffee and roam the wood-shingled clubhouse before being outfitted for a twenty-gauge shotgun (manageable for beginners) and taking in a gun-safety lecture. Then head out for a round on the world-class sporting-clays course.

Make a weekend out of it and stay the night in town at the Porterhouse Inn. While in Millbrook be sure to check out the Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, and the fine antique shops located in the village.

Whiskey:

There’s no drink quite like 18 year old Macallan ($124). Voted best whisky in the world by Whiskey Magazine in 2004, the 18 year vintage of The Macallan is consistently one of the most smooth drinking scotches in the world ( or so says my husband).

The art of shaving: Sandalwood shaving cream. My husband uses this and it is delicious. It has a distinct smell and makes his skin so soft. Irresistible.

For both of you:

Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne: Brut Rose – A beautiful soft salmon pink color with continuous tiny bubbles. The flavors of blackberries, raspberries, red currants, and strawberries give off a feeling of lightness.

Recommended pairings: Salmon tartare, pork tenderloin, fresh goat cheese, red fruits.

Then head to Wallse for their valentine’s day pre-fix menu. Austrian food with a refined light twist. The restaurant has a decidedly romantic feel with towering branches of flowers in the windows and on the bar.

Top it all off with dessert from Billy’s Bakery ( my favorite cupcakes in the city!)

Persephone Books

“A house without books is like a room without windows.” ~Heinrich Mann

I love books in peoples homes. Piled high on cocktail tables, arranged in bookshelves, used as side tables they never fail to inspire me. Books give a sense of history and comfort to a home. All of my books have moved with me from home to home, making each new residence feel like I have lived there for years. Borrowing a favorite book from a friend you can see what they have underlined, marked, and noted on each page or a well loved passage. You can go on ebay or to your local 1st editions bookstore and find many vintage books with beautiful covers. I love poking around old bookstores and libraries hunting for books which have beautiful covers and interesting subject matter. I find the smell of old books or libraries intoxicating.

Persephone Books prints mainly neglected fiction and non-fiction by women, for women and about women. All books have the same pretty dove gray jackets. The titles are printed on the sides in black letters in a white box. Classic and clean. When you open them up you are in for a treat. Each of the 86 books has a different end paper. The founder, Nicola Beauman picks these herself. The books are by female writers from the interwar years. Subjects include, short stories, cookbooks, and memoir. Their best selling authors include: Winifred Watson (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) ,Dorothy Whipple, Marghanita Laski and Frances Hodgson Burnett.

With Titles like: Operation Heartbreak, How to Run Your Home Without Help, Few Eggs and No Oranges, It’s Hard To Be Hip Over Thirty, and The Wise Virgins it is hard to resist purchasing a few. These are a wonderful gift for any time of year!

Below are a few images of the shop in London.

The books are all arranged to display their beautiful end papers.
