Crosby Street Hotel- SoHo NYC

My new favorite hotel in New York City. Color combinations, furniture styles, custom wallpaper…. droooooool, heavy breathing. The 11 floor Crosby Street Hotel is part of an existing chain, Firmdale Hotels, whose six other properties, all in London, have an avid following of transatlantic types from New York and Hollywood.

The hotels lobby welcomes you from the outside with towering steel framed windows and doors that create a greenhouse like feel on the inside. Walking by the hotel on Crosby Street, you can see into the lobby for an eyeful of art that belongs in the MOMA.

Stone dogs and a garden table with an assortment for flower pots welcomes you as you step into the lobby. A bright pair of suzani upholstered wing chairs flank the entrance to the hotel bar and restaurant on your left.

The hotel lobby features a 10 foot high Jaume Plensa steel sculpture of a human head created from letters of the alphabet.

Crosby Street is part of an existing chain, Firmdale Hotels, whose six other properties, all in London, have an avid following of transatlantic types from New York and Hollywood.

Kit Kemp ( owner and designer of the hotel) and I see eye to eye on how color should be used in design. She loves rich fabrics, patterns, and colors. Each of the 86 rooms is individually decorated and styled in a traditional manor with a modern twist. The fabrics, antiques, and art have been collected from all over the world. My amazing upholsterer made many of the drapes that hang on the lead casement style windows. Kit has used all of my favorite textile makers: Raoul Textiles, Van Der Hurd, Robert Kime, etc to create a warm and stimulating environment.

In the hotel’s basement is a screening room, one of Firmdale’s signature touches. The walls are upholstered in a purple felt and the seats are bright orange leather.

Bar Crosby will serves food in a casual, private club-like atmosphere. Antique tables play host to piles of fruit at breakfast.

The chairs in the restaurant are all upholstered in red wool with cutout wool animal silhouettes stitched onto the backs. ( the animal theme is a recurring one- this is a pet friendly hotel!) Bright colors and fun patterns fill the rest of the bar/ dining room and vintage glass lights from the 1950’s hang overhead.

There is an outdoor terrace which is for hotel guests only and is not available for private rentals. After seeing the space I know why they have specified this. It is gorgeous! Set right outside the bar and dining room the large terrace has beautiful antique lanterns and root ball lanterns strung across it. On a warm summer or fall night they light up all the perforated metal lanterns that are set on the ground and the space just glows. The perfect spot to unwind after a day of hitting the streets of SoHo.

The Drawing Room is also a private room only accessible to guests of the hotel. Kit has outdone herself in this space as well. With the warm red walls, various pieces of art hung all over the walls, the suzani print drapes by Robert Kime, and eclectic oversize mirrors, this room feels like the living room of your most fabulously stylish friend. In the evening they set up an “Honesty Bar” on one of the long consoles in the room.

Two large oil painting of Jack Russell’s by Francois Bard:

http://www.artnet.com/artist/425635763/francois-bard.html

I love the magenta/ plum tufted sofa and am still dying over the large knotted wood antique mirror on the left wall. What a find Kit! There are so many patterns throughout the hotel but it does not feel overwhelming. Just well traveled and collected.

Event Spaces:

For those of you who are looking for a space to rent for a board meeting, small wedding ceremony/ reception, or private dinner the Crosby Street Hotel offers 3 beautiful rooms located on the lower level of the hotel. Each one is designed differently.

Layfeyette Room: A break from all the color that Crosby Street offers. This room is filled with greys and browns, upholstered walls, a world map that has been broken up into segments and framed in lucite hangs on the wall, rows of stone inset in the large wooden table, and an Argentinean ceiling fixture. Perfect fr a dinner or board meeting.

Spring Room: Bold orange wallpaper with white white fruits and flowers packs a punch while the farmhouse table and white wicker chairs take on a more relaxed vibe. The massive gilt sunburst mirror on the wall adds a dash of glamour. This room would be perfect for a bridal or baby shower.

Prince Room: This room is the largest and was being set up for a wedding ceremony and reception while I was touring. What a fun location to have a wedding. With all the beautiful fabrics and wallpaper the space all ready has such personality you can bring in your floral arrangements and be done. It is normally set up as you see in the image above and is more of a lounge than the other two rooms. A great spot to have a fundraiser or party.

If you are interested in renting any of the above 3 spaces you can contact Olivia Taylor for pricing and additional information.

Outside of the screening room and the event spaces lives Joe The Polar Bear bookshelf. He is an endangered species! There were only 50 made and 2 of them live in the United States. Click on the website below to see where his relatives are living.

Joe The Polar Bear website: http://joethepolarbear.com/joethepolarbear.htm

The Kemp’s commissioned british artist Peter Rocklin to do a series of paintings that hang on the wall surrounding Joe the polar bear. He painted images of the surrounding restaurants, people. and pets that can be found in the area surrounding the hotel. See all images on his website: http://www.peterrocklin.com/commissions?album=6&gallery=16

I viewed the following bedrooms and LOVED them all. Each one is unique so you can stay in a differently designed room every time you visit. They range in size and price but all have amazing views of SoHo.

10th Floor- suite 1007 The Crosby Suite

At 1,100 square feet this room is enormous. This suite is their top of the line room. Being on the 10th floor the view is amazing. There are not many tall buildings in SoHo so you can see quite a bit through the enormous steel cased windows. There seems to be more glass than wall. With walls upholstered in purple linen, wooden and lucite table lamps, large sofas, a card table, a white wire chandelier, and a terrarium in the living room you cannot believe there is more in store. The bedroom is off to your right with an oversized horizontally channeled headboard upholstered in a floral fabric. Vanderhurd Cut Flower Pattern in violet adorns the windows in long plush drapes with a fabulous tape trim detail.

11th Floor- Room 1106

700 square feet is quite spacious for a hotel room. This room is furnished with a large antique hutch that holds china. Upon entering you feel like you are in the apartment of a friend. The walls are upholstered in tan linen and the rest of the room has bursts of watermelon, red, and beige. A patterend raoul textile pillow and a beautiful white cotton quilt make the bed very inviting

8th Floor – Room 809

This suite has a vertically channeled headboard, a beautiful silver demi-lune with a silver elephant head and trunk as the middle leg, upholstered magenta linen walls, framed sari’s in lucite boxes on the walls. This was my favorite headboard. The fabric was hand embroidered and the antique mirror detail at the top was beautiful. The little framed prints were also very pretty. The small lucite dress maker models are available for purchase through the front desk.

Below are views from junior suite 809.

8th Floor- Standard Room 803

This is the smallest room and they still managed to fit a nice sized seating area. The walls are painted a soft dove grey with one accent wall painted acid yellow. THe oversize headboard is upholstered in a wide striped fabric in acid yellow, dove grey and ivory. The soft blue green gustavian chests of drawers bring it back towards traditional.

All rooms have huge bathroom with a grey and purple swirled granite, double sinks, a shower and a tub.

You get all of this and the hotel is also one of the most environmentally friendly hotels built in the United States and hopes to be one of the very first certified GOLD LEED hotels in New York. Guest rooms provide all the usual amenities found in a deluxe hotel including luxury linens, WiFi, flat screen tv and i-pod docking station.

Design Tips – Painted Floors

NNeed a quick and relatively easy way to spruce up your new space? Go for painted floors. If you need to disguise a less than beautiful wood floor this is a great trick and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Instead of a runner try a painted floor with a border to make the space special. A light colored painted floor reflects more light and will brighten up the space. I have painted floors in bathrooms, living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, kitchens, hallways, and basements. Check out the examples below and get inspired.

Jeffrey Bilhuber uses an oversized pattern in soft colors to add interest. Nail heads galore, lacquered orange walls…. amazing.

Sara Story follows suit with the contrast of the plummy ceiling for some oomph!

This traditional pattern makes for a warm and interesting entrance.

The aqua floor with large white medallions is the revers of what is on the walls.

I love everything about this image. The glazed blue walls, tortoise shell/ tigers eye detail on the door frame, and the large orange painted medallions. Jeffrey Bilhuber is a master.

Great color and pattern- this painted floor looks like beautiful tiles.

Mary McDonald uses a graphic zig zag pattern in soft blue and white to create a playful floor in a bathroom.

One of my all time favorites for a small kitchen floor- Carrera marble countertops, soft grey brown high gloss cabinets and antiqued mirror backsplash.

Old farmhouse floor boards showing through with a more rustic looking medallion pattern.

Happy Nancy Lancaster yellow floors with a pretty white medallion pattern.

Miles Redd ( another master of the painted floor) goes for high drama in his kitchen.

The above two images are from a recently completed beach house. We wanted a guest bedroom in the basement to feel light and airy. We painted the floor a glossy white and got our inspiration for the sweet border from the beach roses that can be seen from the bedroom window. The border was painted by our fabulous decorative painter, Topher Rollinson.

Elle Decor March 2010 favorites

What’s Hot: D. Porthault has introduced a new pattern and I love it! My grandmother had D. Porthault linens all over her Rhode Island summer home and i have loved them since I was a little girl. They can be fresh and modern depending on the rest of the room. The patterns below are from the Delices Indiens collection. Both patterns are from archived 1970s designs with a palette inspired by the colors and spices of India.

“Team Players” – by Nate Berkus and Anne Coyle. I love the library. The clustered art work creates a cozy vibe in the library. Dark blue (Farrow and Ball’s Off Black) glossy paint always sets art off nicely. This room does it for me- comfortable and elegant. Ticking stripe on the settee, a simple tufted arm chair on wheels, the brass tables, lamp, and ceiling fixture, ikat throw pillow, all resting on a sisal rug. Perfection. The huge arrangements of peonies is also stunning. Great propping!

“Classic Training” New York City Apartment. The family room carpet is beautiful. Made by Shyam Ahuja, you can customize the colors. The bold graphic pattern is so sharp and clean with an element of fun. I go long on fun and am all for this carpet! Perfect for a new client of mine. The 19th century Russian chandelier, chocolate brown glazed Christopher Spitzmiller lamps, and Warhol make this a warm and inviting room.

The Girl from Ipanema

We LOVED Rio and Sao Paulo! This was a trip we took last March so I am only posting the memories and images that really stood out!

Fasano- Rio:

The Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro was designed by French designer Philippe Starck and is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Wood, glass, marble, and leather are the core materials used in the design. A giant Pekia tree was used to create the recption desk- truly stunning. The small boutique hotel overlooking Ipanema beach enjoys a spirit of sophisticated casualness, with many furnishings in the vein of 1950s and ’60s Brazilian design, including pieces by Studio Branco & Preto, Sergio Rodrigues and exclusive creations by Philippe Starck. I was immediately reminded of the decor of the Soho House in Manhattan. Modern yet casual with a few traditional pieces mixed in. Bedrooms have soothing white walls, leather-upholstered Mies daybeds, and private balconies. The butler service, egyptian cotton sheets, snuggly down comforters keep you relaxed and comfy. The two pairs of local Havaianas flip-flops they place in your hotel leaves you with no excuse not to hit the beach and watch a game of foot volley!

The rooftop pool (guests only) offers stunning panoramas of Rio’s storied natural skyline, including the nearby Pao de Azucar (Sugar Loaf Mountain). There’s also a fitness center, nightclub (Londra), and upscale shopping options nearby. We would sit up on the roof for cocktails ( there are many delicious options to choose from including a freshly carved coconut- yum!) and watch the sunset behind Corcovada ( Christ The Redeemer).

The Fasano Rio also includes the Al Mare restaurant, which serves Italian/Brazilian seafood cuisine under the command of Chef Luca Guzzoni, formerly of Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence. I had the risotto with saffron and rock lobster…. delicious!!

All colors seem brighter in Rio- I can still see the sun drenched yellows, greens, reds, and blues. The locals playing futbol ( soccer) on the beach and the beach vendors are all dressed in brightly colored clothes/ bathing suits.

We journeyed into Lapa for a night of live music. The band was incredible and never took a break.

Fasano- Sao Paulo

The hotel is located on a tree lined street in the Jardins section of Sao Paulo. The decor is similar with dark wood, stone, imported english furniture mixed with brazilian furniture from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. The scattered books, long fireplaces, and large leather club chairs make you feel like you have entered a private club rather than a hotel lobby. The long bar is dead ahead and they make a mean caiparinha. The large antique map of the world which hangs behind the reception desk is beautiful. To my mind, this hotel had the perfect decor for a manhattan bachelor. So stylish and chic but maintaining a sense of comfort.

The bar/ lounge was the spot to be at night. There was an amazing jazz singer performing Sinatra songs.

Favorite Restaurant: Figueria Rubaiyat – The prettiest restaurant in Sao Paulo. The outdoor tables are set up under the branches of a giant sprawling Fig tree ( thought to be over 130 years old). The baskets of Pao de Queijo ( bread backed with cheese inside…do not ask how many I ate) could not come fast enough.

For the sporty man: Drive an hour and a half outside of NYC and take aim at clays at Sandanona Shooting Grounds in Millbrook, NY. Once a tweedy private shooting club (the oldest in the country), Sandanona was purchased by Orvis, the outdoor sports clothier, and opened to the masses. Sip coffee and roam the wood-shingled clubhouse before being outfitted for a twenty-gauge shotgun (manageable for beginners) and taking in a gun-safety lecture. Then head out for a round on the world-class sporting-clays course.

Make a weekend out of it and stay the night in town at the Porterhouse Inn. While in Millbrook be sure to check out the Millbrook Vineyards and Winery, and the fine antique shops located in the village.

Whiskey:

There’s no drink quite like 18 year old Macallan ($124). Voted best whisky in the world by Whiskey Magazine in 2004, the 18 year vintage of The Macallan is consistently one of the most smooth drinking scotches in the world ( or so says my husband).

The art of shaving: Sandalwood shaving cream. My husband uses this and it is delicious. It has a distinct smell and makes his skin so soft. Irresistible.

For both of you:

Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne: Brut Rose – A beautiful soft salmon pink color with continuous tiny bubbles. The flavors of blackberries, raspberries, red currants, and strawberries give off a feeling of lightness.

Recommended pairings: Salmon tartare, pork tenderloin, fresh goat cheese, red fruits.

Then head to Wallse for their valentine’s day pre-fix menu. Austrian food with a refined light twist. The restaurant has a decidedly romantic feel with towering branches of flowers in the windows and on the bar.

Voltz Clarke Gallery

Blair Clarke, the stylish southern gallery owner fills her New York City apartment with the work of the artists she represents and after looking at the images below you will know why. Blair has an eye for talent. I look to Blair to supply pieces that my client’s will love. She stages pop-up shows throughout the year at various Manhattan venues. The interiors of her apartment are quite classic in style thus setting off her collection of art very nicely. Blair’s home will be on the Armory VIP tour this year so you will be able to take a peak!

Focusing on the exposure of contemporary artists through private consulting and public exhibitions, the company has a particular emphasis on introducing international artists to the US market. Clarke’s experience combines over nine years of East coast gallery associations, curatorial projects and a consulting relationship with Sanford L. Smith & Associates.

Voltz Clarke maintains a roster of international artists whose works are available to view online and by appointment. Clarke who loves to travel believes that one should cast the net wide in order to identify new talent. In a market which is increasingly globalized, she is intrigued by the rich diversity in work found often in unexpected places.

The below works are for sale through Blair Voltz Clarke:

Natasha Law:

An english painter, Law’s signature style is bold, high-gloss paintings. The high gloss is reminiscent of lip gloss, a polished nail, a shiny new car, or patent leather high heel. So glossy it almost looks wet. Multiple layers of high gloss paint on aluminum creates this effect. Her subjects are usually semi-clothed, cropped and fragmented, and distinctly feminine. She reduces the shapes of her subject and uses bold colors to create a minimalist style. Law graduated from Camberwell college in 2000 and has grown internationally with shows on both sides of the Atlantic: Eleven Gallery in London, Rivington Arms Gallery and Voltz Clarke in Manhattan. And yes, she is Jude Law’s sister.

**Natasha Law will also do custom paintings. You can sit for her or provide her with an image. I have commissioned several for clients ( of them, their children, and their dogs!)

Natasha Law, Pink Bikini on Coffee, 2008, Gloss on Cartridge, 60 x 48 inches

Natasha Law, Sitting H, 2007, Gloss on Aluminum, 24×24 inches

Natasha Law, Grey Vest on Blue, 2008, Gloss on Cartridge

Natasha Law, Green Bikini on Green, 2008, Gloss on Cartridge

Pink Vest on Pink, 2008, Gloss on Cartridge, 60 x 48 inches and 51.5 x 63 inches

Chrstina Burch:

Christina Burch’s recent body of work entitled “Garland of Skulls” includes twelve paintings commissioned by New York private collector Alberto Mugrabi. These are a play on the traditional natur morte combined with anatomical references from buddhist and taoist texts. These will be on exhibition in 2010 along with new works available through Voltz Clarke. Having recently relocated from New York City to Ann Arbor, Michigan, Burch’s new work is inspired by the full moon and natural surroundings in Michigan. Beginning this summer, she will be serving as the president of Copper Colored Mountain Arts. Set on over 20 acres of lush gardens in rural Ann Arbor, CCMA is an arts community offering workshops as well as exhibitions and events – visit www.ccma.org. Currently Burch is curating a show of sculpture and outdoor installation by young contemporary artists scheduled to open this July. I love the colors and the style of Burch’s art. Her paintings combine propaganda, cartoons, printed and digital media, landscape and figurative imagery. She is particularly inspired by Japanese prints, as is reflected in her work.

Sea of Marrow 30″ x 30″ acrylic on canvas

Garland of Lotus 32″ x 32″ acrylic on canvas

Sea of Blood 24″ x 24″ acrylic on canvas

I would love to use ” Sea of Blood” as a jumping off point for a dining room:

Walls painted in that dusty peach color (Farrow and Ball Cinder Rose) with high gloss deep blue trim (Farrow and Ball Drawing Room Blue). Soft french blue stried silk drapes unlined hung on lucite rods with gold leaf bamboo rings. Chinoiserie style dining chairs with ivory linen velvet seats. The table would be set with Imari china throwing in a punch of orange.

Sun K. Kwak

Sun is amazing! Her work appears to be paint but is actually masking tape.

She had a huge show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art recently: http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/sun_k_kwak/

The above two images are an installation Sun did in Blair’s apartment. I love the modern “paint splash” effect on the classic architectural detail.
