Autumn Hues- Beige

Beige- camel, sand, caramel, toast, tan, taupe, buff, acorn, mushroom, squash, milkshake, hay, chardonnay.

A shade or two darker than ivory or just shy of brown tan is a wonderful neutral.  It can read both feminine and masculine depending on what is paired with it.

Soft painted beiges:

The above room by Bunny Williams has soft beige walls and a sisal rug while the upholstered pieces take the room into darker caramel and toffee hues.

A bedroom by Jeffrey Bilhuber plays with ivories, beiges and grays for a neutral, relaxing, and sophisticated scheme.

A living room by Jeffrey Bilhuber

Beiges and animal prints:

How chic! An entry staircase covered in leopard.  The natural pine console and mirror keep it from going over the top.

Soft beige walls are the perfect backdrop to the bold art and spotted rug ( carpet is Antelope through Stark)

Soft beiges and creams keep the room feeling light and airy and the pinks, reds, and animal print benches add a spark of personality.

Ivory walls with pops of tan:

Above: I LOVE this tan sofa with the nail head details. Show stopper!

The effect of wood:

A home by Thom Felicia.  The natural walls, beams, and stone fireplace take center stage.

A barn done by Carrier and Co.  The natural wide wood planks on the walls and the beams create a wonderfully rustic backdrop for the linen sofa upholstered in ticking stripe, the rush wing back chairs, and the farmhouse table.

One more barn conversion above.  The old brick floors are softened a bit by the sisal rug, kilim ottoman, and sofa.

Deeper textural caramels:

The zig zag patterned grasscloth makes this neutral color anything but boring.

Deep caramel walls and the caramel/ goldenrod mohair club chair make this room ready for fall. Room by Nate Berkus.

Though neutral in color (except for the wild yellow sofa), Nate Berkus heightened the drama of the room with texture.  The stone fireplace, leather upholstered panels on the wall above and lots of brass and bronze make this room interesting.

Autumn Hues – Red

For some people the Fall brings out their lacquered reds, peacock blues, and vivd oranges while others shift into classic neutrals (tans, greys, browns) with pops of animal print. As a designer, I am comfortable with all of the above and depending on the day you will find me expressing myself with different colors. In the boldest environments I still like a polished sophisticated tone so even if color abounds I will keep a neutral wall, sofa, or carpet. While in a neutral environment I love a dash of bold rich color (found in Lamps, a throw, or a chair) to give the space depth and warmth. I have selected rooms that represent fall to me in all the colors of the rainbow.

Red: Crimson, scarlet, tomato, brick, oxblood, geranium, cherry, pomegranate, fire engine red, sangria, blue red, orange red, chinese red, tulip red… Everyone has a particular red in mind when they tell me they want a “red room”.  There is a red for everyone.  I adore red in a room.  It feels daring and bold, while at the same time warm, sexy, and intimate. It works well with other colors ( particularly greens – not christmas tree green but apple greens, spring greens and other more modern shades) and blues ( I love it with pale sky blue, and cadet blue). Below are some of my favorite red rooms:

A high gloss lacquered red wall is amazing.  It makes me think of nail polish.  The neutral sofa, deep chocolate velvet arm chair, and leopard stools keep the room sophisticated.

This dining room/ library is fabulous.  The deep red felt table skirt is so festive ( as are the tiny lacquered red sconce shades).  Mixed with the antique carpet, warm wood bookshelves, and patterned drapes this room is so cozy.  Many people only use their dining room for formal occasions.  By making this a library/ dining room combo you would spend all your time in here.

This is a room done by me! Brick red venetian plaster walls gave this sunny room a bit of atmosphere.  We kept the sofa and arm chair clean in ivory linen and let the throw pillows and zebra rug be our pops. A leather ottoman, leather floor lamp gave us some additional texture to keep the room tough enough for after dinner cocktails.

I love the bold red sofa and carpet mixed with all the various prints. Bohemian luxe!

Miles Redd kept it classic with a bamboo bed, antique carpet, upholstered fabric walls.  But somehow you get a fresh feeling with the simple triple line sheets, pops of deep crimson in the table skirt and drapes.  And the shape and detail in the pelmets…amazing.

Glossy red walls in a dining room set off by deep brown/ burgundy moldings. Very glam.

de Gournay wallpaper in red on the walls, chocolate brown and ivory ikat desk chair, bright red leather desk chair, blue and white china planter, and zebra rug make this room delicious!

Tory Burch’s New York apartment’s bar is another favorite.  Glossy red walls with delicate unlacquered brass sconces brings a vintage feel to the space.

Another Miles Redd design- Red felt walls mixed with sky blue and deep cobalt blue- delicious.

Another woman who loved red… Diana Vreeland.  She is pictured above in her “Garden In Hell” room by Billy Baldwin.  The chintz fabric can be found at Pierre Frey.

Fun red wallpapers below:

Scalamandre Baldwin Bamboo

Scalamandre zebra wallpaper has been a huge hit- we get lots of requests for this one… it was also featured in The Royal Tenenbaums ( see below)!

Clarenece House- Flowering Quince is another popular wallpaper.  It has been featured in many design magazines but one of my favorite room’s is Sara Costello’s NY bedroom (below).

I love the above room: wallpaper is Jardin Chinois by Waterhouse Wallhangings

Yellow Fever

As the sunlight changes in New York and the daffodils are some of the first flowers to pop up I have begun to crave yellow. Most of my clients have rather strong feelings towards yellow. Love or hate. As with any other color, the shade of yellow is important and while you may hate strong lemon yellows a soft buttery yellow can work as a neutral and you may be surprised to find you love it.

Soft buttery yellow walls:

This is the most pleasing to me. Suggesting happiness without forcing it. In a western facing room a soft buttery yellow will come to life in the late afternoon when the sunsets. The below shades are both warm and sophisticated.

The above shade of yellow is gorgeous and works well with the faded fabrics and warm woods in the room. The perfect country house sitting room.

Though the above room is quote formal the soft yellow walls make it warm, approachable, and relaxing.

In the above image we are treading into apricot territory but this has a very similar feel to a soft yellow/ cantaloupe wall. I love it paired with neutrals and a dash of plum.

Yellow paired with black:

Quite an arresting combination. It takes the sweet softness out of the yellow and gives it an edgy personality.

Soft yellow walls paired with citrus colors below evoke a beachy and energizing vibe.

Full on lemon yellow:

You cannot deny that both rooms have a totally different energy than the rooms above.

Above: Nancy Lancaster’s drawing room by John Fowler, painted a vivid shade of buttercup yellow had a reputation as one of the most extraordinary rooms in London.

Pops of yellow:

Just a bit of yellow lifts a room.

The above yellow and white silk zebra is one of my favorite fabrics and we just used it in a beach house.

I love the yellow leather dining chairs- unexpected, practical, and fun.

3.1 Phillip Lim- Fall 2010

I have never been disappointed with Phillip Lim’s collections. Fall 2010 was another great one! He showed amazing outerwear staples mixed with some 70s disco glam.

Lim’s mood board:

Tough leather with soft fluffy fur and high waisted mustard yellow pants.

Collarless camel coat- staple

Keeping the sparkle alive for another season mixed with a soft lavender- yum. This is reminiscent of a room I just finished. Lavender grasscloth with lots of soft sparkly gold antique mirror.

Pow! Love this gold suit. The drape of the pants is fab as is the blazer. I would probably wear one piece at a time but love the impact.

The classic trench with warm rabbit lining.
