Prada Spring 2011 Campaign

In New York it is snowing, freezing, and all together nasty. The winter doldrums are upon us and everyone needs a mental break. Sping is one of the best seasons in New York. The Winter storms let up and with the disappearance of the last snowflake you can feel people’s spirits rising. The Spring 2011 add campaigns get me in the mood for a tropical vacation. Stripes, bold colors, and fun accessories are my cure for the winter blues. Prada’s collection has me particularly excited. I could definitely rock any of their Spring shoes or cocktail dresses. Bold colors and raffia are a great combination!

House Beautiful October 2010

The October issue of House Beautiful shifted into fall beautifully. With pieces on sun-drenched Tuscan color, animal print rugs, pumpkin cupckaes, and fall fabric collections I was feeling the urge to head upstate to see the leaves starting to change and drink a cup of hot apple cider.

My favorite feature was the Park Avenue apartment designed by Daniel Sachs.  The moody grey/ blue entry hall feels like it has been there forever with the large Italian mirror, indian painting, Flemish table, and swedish chandelier. I love a layered atmosphere.  It is a great way to let your personality shine through.

The living room is chock-full of pattern and color.  Keeping the wall color neutral adds a sophisticated look to this well traveled vibe.  We have ikat, floral, stripes, and embroidered suzani all living happily in one space.  The turkish rug is from the 19th century.  The modern art mixes beautifully with the traditional setting, keeping the room feeling fresh.

Lastly, I love the boys room.  The blown up map applied as wallpaper is the perfect way for kids to spend an afternoon “traveling” within the safety of their apartment.  I would have looked at this map for hours as a child.  A very sophisticated way to add whimsy to a child’s room.

More on fall color to come….

New York Fashion Week: Oscar de la Renta Spring 2011 and Oscar de la Renta for Lee Jofa

While some pieces from the spring collection were a bit too retro for me I loved the 3 looks below.  I am always a fan of his embroidery and his lady like dresses.

Oscar’s new fabric collection with Lee Jofa is fabulous! Rich embroidery, velvets, wools, felts, ikats, and stripes make this collection one you want to touch.  Perfect for fall!

I MUST use these for a future client…. a headboard, drapes, wall upholstery….please! The embroidery is stunning and the colors are so rich.

A beautiful ikat fabric in light blue, teal, and green

A rythmic classic stripe in deep navy and blue.

A wild suzani in plums, reds, teals, and yellow packs a punch and would be lovely on club chairs.

Stripes!

For my clients who are looking for a graphic detail I love bringing in stripes. They can be both modern and traditional. I have used them all over- in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and powder rooms. They always pack a punch. There are plenty of striped wallpapers out there but to create just the right color, width, or texture I turn to my decorative painters.

A project we are currently working on is shown above. The client has a large loft space and we needed something to spruce up the living room/ dining room area and make the space with such high ceilings feel a bit more special. Our decorative painter created a beautiful neutral metallic mix for the 5 wide horizontal stripes. In some light they appear a pearly shade, mid-day to late afternoon they become a bolder shimmering gold, and at night they go back to a neutral accent. They set off the metal sculptures beautifully. Stay tuned for more photos as the project progresses.

The above nursery is another current project. The charcoal rug has pale blue and green details and we painted a fun pale blue circus tent stripe on the walls.

Vertical Stripes:

Bold black and white stripes and a black and white Carlton Varney runner create an entrance you won’t soon forget.

Ashley Branca uses a cherry red stripe all over the room above. The black molding adds a modern twist.

I love this happy yellow and white striped bathroom. The awkward angle of the ceiling gave them an opportunity to create a canvas effect.

Horizontal Stripes:

Amanda Nisbet keeps it neutral and classic but the thin horizontal stripes add a modern elegance to the small space. Remember, even a small nook in your home is an opportunity for fun.

Mary McDonald sets of the neutral furniture and sisal rug with punch high gloss stripes.

Miles Redd brings a modern vibe into this living space in florida. With views of the water it is nice to keep your eyes on the landscape outside. he plays this up with aqua stripes and an interesting valance.

Stripes can go anywhere…Eric Cohler brings them into the shower with a striped pattern in the tile. It doesn’t get cooler than this.

An otherwise neutral nursery gets a pop of fun… on the ceiling with bold yellow stripes. Fun for your baby to look up at!

Great Fashion Designers Homes

It’s Fashion Week her in NYC we have seen some amazing pieces for Fall 2010. In the midst of the fashion madness I have found myself turning to some of the great designers homes as well as the runways for inspiration. Below are a few of my favorites.

Carolina Herrera: Just as classic and chic as her designs on the runway. Lots of stripes and yummy velvet.

I had to throw in these images of Carolina Herrera Jr’s home– both mother and daughter love red, stripes, and bold classic statement pieces. I love all the suzani! This is one of my favorite apartments of all time.

YSL: A legend who surrounded himself with exquisite objects. His home is a jewel box. You want to pick up and examine everything. He had an exceptional collection of paintings and art including works by: Picasso, Mondrian, Matisse, Goya, Ingres; and furniture from the Renaissance period to Art Deco period.

There is barely any room on the cocktail table…this man was a collector.

I love the above library

Marc Jacobs: Below are images of his three-story garden apartment on the Champ de Mars. Beautiful traditional moldings and paneling coupled with modern furniture makes for a fabulous apartment!

Lanvin: “Lanvin Blue” a cornflower shade of blue was the designers favorite color. The below rooms have been recreated in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

The bathroom below is very glamorous- I love the floor and the pedestal sink.

Coco Chanel: Her home was above her boutique in Paris. Her home is used for photo shoots and press interviews. She had many black lacquered chinoiserie screens. Her home is quite opulent with glistening chandeliers and gleaming mirrors and lacquer but still feels intimate and comfortable. Coco Chanel did not have a bedroom her…she slept across the street at The Ritz- of course!

The tan suede sofa was one of Coco’s favorites and would sit on it while interviewing. The color and fabric were some of her favorites.

Valentino’s Capri Home 1971: I love all of this blue and white. Crisp and cool with beautiful patterns.

Oscar De La Renta’s home in Kent, CT: Gardens are perfection and I love the living room. The reds, greens, and creams keep the grand scale feeling intimate.

Oscar De La Renta: table setting 1971: this is so much fun- one of my favorites.

Christian Louboutin: Would you expect the man who makes the most fabulous shoes to live in a lack-luster home? The vibrant orange walls with the classic molding and vibrant rug- Love it!
